72 Hours in New York: The city that never sleeps

There are few cities that capture the energy and excitement like New York. Even if you’ve never been before or especially if you have, the city always has something new to discover. New York has a way of pulling you in with its boldness. Every street corner holds a story, every moment feels bigger than itself. Even in the briefest escape, the city reminds you that magic isn’t something you search for… it’s something you feel in the rhythm of its streets and once you’ve felt it, a part of you never really leaves.

If you’re dreaming of a mini-break that feels like stepping straight into a movie, here’s how I do New York in style…

The Refinery Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel situated in Midtown Manhattan’s Garment District, just a couple of blocks from 5th Avuenue shopping.

This central Midtown location places guests right in the heart of the city’s energy, with great access to subway lines and major attractions, making it ideal for a stylish 72‑hour New York escape.

Check in to the Refinery Hotel with iconic skyline views, then step straight into the rhythm of New York with a walk through Central Park. It’s the perfect introduction to the city, a moment of calm surrounded by skyscrapers and the hum of Manhattan life.

From there, head down to the Upper East Side or Midtown for a late lunch or early dinner. New York is a city where meals turn into moments, so take your time and enjoy the buzz around you.

As evening falls, there’s only one place to go for that unforgettable first-night feeling: a rooftop bar. Watching the skyline light up as the sun sets over Manhattan is one of those New York moments that never gets old.

Tip: Always request an upper-floor room, there’s nothing better than sipping prosecco above the rooftops at sunset.

What I Did…

The following morning I started out like a true New Yorker, with brunch. Find a relaxed café, order coffee and something indulgent, and enjoy a slow start to the day, people watching is a must.

Afterwards, head downtown to SoHo. The cobbled streets are lined with boutiques, galleries and stylish cafés, making it one of the most enjoyable neighbourhoods to wander. Even without a shopping list, it’s easy to spend hours exploring.

In the afternoon, I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge for one of the most iconic views of the Manhattan skyline. The perspective from the bridge is unforgettable and gives you a real sense of the scale of the city. Got a ticket for ‘top of the rock’ this is not for the light headed!

Spend the evening in the West Village, one of New York’s most charming neighbourhoods. Tree-lined streets, small restaurants and softly lit wine bars give the area a completely different feel from the towering energy of Midtown.

On your final day grab that all important coffee and wander through the streets without a plan. New York often reveals its best moments when you’re simply exploring.

If you’re in the mood for culture, this is the perfect time to visit a museum or gallery. The city’s art scene is world-class and offers a peaceful contrast to the busy streets outside.

Before leaving, make time for one last skyline moment. Whether it’s a walk along the High Line or a quiet pause overlooking the city from a park bench, it’s the perfect way to say goodbye to New York.

Seventy-two hours in New York always feels like the beginning of something rather than the end. The city leaves you inspired, energised, and already thinking about the next time you’ll return.

Tip: As a solo traveller you get to fully soak in the city at your own pace

Would I Go Back Tomorrow? Absolutely.

There’s a freedom in exploring solo with no schedules, no compromises, just pure curiosity guiding your day. Every moment becomes your own, a rooftop sunset, a quiet park bench, a perfect slice of pizza, or a gallery that sparks inspiration. I’d go back tomorrow because the city reminds you that adventure, joy, and little bursts of wonder don’t have an age limit. Traveling alone isn’t just seeing a city it’s seeing yourself, fully and unapologetically, in the heart of it.
